Reverse Engineering & 3D Scanning Services in Huntington Beach, CA
Turn any physical part into a precise, editable digital model
From Physical Part to Digital Model
Bitform provides professional reverse engineering and 3D scanning services from our Huntington Beach, CA facility, serving Orange County manufacturers, engineers, and restorers. When original drawings are lost, the OEM no longer exists, or you need to modify an existing part without starting from scratch, our scan-to-CAD workflow recreates any physical component as a fully parametric, production-ready digital model.
Our structured-light scanning captures geometry down to 0.05 mm resolution, and our experienced CAD team converts raw scan data into clean, editable solid models — not just mesh approximations. Located in Huntington Beach with easy access from Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, and Irvine, we offer drop-off scanning for portable parts and on-site scanning for equipment that can't leave your facility.
The Scan-to-CAD Process
Five stages from physical part to manufactured replacement.
3D Scanning
We capture the physical part using structured-light or laser scanning technology, generating a dense point cloud with millions of data points. Scan resolution down to 0.05 mm ensures every feature, contour, and surface texture is faithfully recorded.
Point Cloud Processing
Raw scan data is aligned, cleaned, and merged into a unified point cloud. We remove noise, fill scan shadows, and register multi-angle captures into a single, watertight dataset ready for mesh generation.
Mesh Generation
The point cloud is converted into a high-resolution polygon mesh (STL/OBJ). We optimize triangle count for downstream use — high-poly for visual accuracy, decimated for simulation, or quad-remeshed for animation workflows.
CAD Modeling
Using the mesh as a reference, we build a fully parametric CAD model in Fusion 360 with proper feature trees, constraints, and design intent. The result is an editable, production-ready solid model — not a dumb mesh import.
Manufacturing
Once the CAD model is approved, we manufacture replacement parts using 3D printing or CNC machining. Material and process are matched to the original part's functional requirements, with improvements applied where beneficial.
Applications
Common scenarios where reverse engineering and 3D scanning deliver value.
Obsolete Part Recreation
When original drawings don't exist and the OEM is no longer in business, reverse engineering is the only path to replacement parts. We recreate discontinued components with modern materials and tighter tolerances than the originals.
Legacy Equipment Support
Aging industrial equipment often outlives its spare parts supply chain. We scan and model wear components, brackets, housings, and mechanisms to keep legacy machinery operational without expensive retooling.
Quality Inspection
Compare manufactured parts against original CAD models with color-map deviation analysis. Identify warpage, tooling wear, or dimensional drift across production runs with sub-0.1 mm precision.
Design Modification
Start with an existing part and improve it — add mounting features, optimize wall thickness, integrate new interfaces, or adapt geometry for a different manufacturing process. Faster than designing from scratch.
Digital Archiving
Create permanent digital records of physical components, tooling, patterns, and assemblies. Searchable, measurable, and shareable — a digital twin that preserves institutional knowledge.
Material & Process Conversion
Convert a cast part to a machined design, an injection-molded component to 3D-printed, or a metal bracket to a composite layup. Reverse engineering provides the geometry baseline for process re-engineering.
Output Formats
Deliverables in whatever format your workflow requires.
